Metenis 2016
Meteņi is a festival where the ancient Latvians celebrated the passing of winter and started preparing for the coming of spring. Meteņi saw the winter's last mask processions, when people sang, danced, wished well, visited each other far away, rode sleighs down a mountain and boasted to ensure a good harvest.
The most popular Meteņi traditions are: wearing masks, chasing away Metenis, searching for the button of happiness, driving away moles from gardens, and cooking delicious Meteņi porridge.
The Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum invites you to celebrate the traditional Meteņi Day, when it is still cold outside and snow covers the ground, but spring is already in the air. It is a turning point in nature and farmers' daily routine.
We will celebrate the traditional Meteņi Day directly between Christmas and Easter, wear masks and visit each other, sing, joke, compete, ride sleighs, eat smoked pork boiled into a porridge of barley and potatoes, bacon buns, drive away winter and awaken the earth.
