STARO RĪGA FESTIVAL OF LIGHT 2014 WILL REINVENT ITSELF DURING THE EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE YEAR
The Staro Rīga 2014 Festival of Light will delight residents and visitors of Rīga over five evenings, from 14 to 18 November 2014.
The Staro Rīga Festival of Light will experience a positive force majeure during the European Capital of Culture year. It will change from being an event featuring light and video objects and installations, which it has been in previous years, to a platform for national and international multimedia light and technological art projects. The main objects of the festival will be specially constructed video installations, projections, and light installations, by internationally acclaimed artists.
In collaboration with the biggest festivals of light in the world, Staro Rīga 2014 will participate in artist mobility programmes, and will transform Rīga’s dark November evenings into a colourful world of light and video installations. Staro Rīga 2014 is part of the Rīga Carnival chapter of the European Capital of Culture programme and, correspondingly, the theme of the festival this year is also Rīga Carnival.
The objects featured in the festival will be selected by curators of the festival and the artistic council of the Rīga 2014 Foundation. There will be fewer objects than in previous years, but each will provide a special experience to the festival’s visitors. It is expected that the urban art projects will be created by the best Latvian and most well-known international light and video installation artists and creative collectives. By featuring high quality and internationally acclaimed light objects the festival will become part of the international movement of festivals of light. Several international objects will be unveiled for the first time in Rīga, and the festival will also feature works from the biggest festivals of light from around Europe and beyond.
The Rīga 2014 Foundation invites supporters to help in the creation of a broad festival of light programme by supporting the presentations in Rīga, this year’s European Capital of Culture, of the works chosen by curators.
