In the end of June, the world-famous auction house „Christie's” held in auction dedicated to the sale of the collection of garden statuary from the collection of Baron and Baroness Sweerts de Landas Wyborgh-a noble Dutch family. The collection resided in their homestead Dunsborough House, which originally was built in 1630.
In 1991, the Baron and Baroness Sweerts de Landas Wyborgh embarked upon restoring the six acres of walled gardens with the help and advice of garden designers Penelope Hobhouse and Rupert Golby
During the period of 20 years, the owners have collated an extensive collection of garden antiques including sculptures, fountains, garden benches, seats and even antique gardening tools including watering cans, and shovels for the soil.
The name of the Auction House speaks for itself confirming the highest quality of consignments presented at Christie's auction. It is not surprising that during the auction, which had lasted two days the „serious fight” took place for the majority of lots, causing triple rise of the sales price compared to the estimated price.
Thus, the owners of the Gallery Park Hotel managed to buy two lots for the hotel's private garden - A VICTORIAN GREEN-PAINTED CAST-IRON 'FLOWER STAND' (circa 1880), and A PAIR OF VICTORIAN CAST-IRON PLANT STANDS (late 19th century), each of demi-lune form with four pierced tiers supported by lion mask/
As a result the garden collection of Baron and Baroness was sold for almost 3 million pounds during this auction. During the upcoming week the consignments will be delivered to Riga and after the restoration will be placed in the Gallery Park Hotel & SPA (Rīga, Kr.Valdemāra, 7), private garden and summer veranda for the enjoyment of it’s guests.
